Pros and cons of BBC History Magazine app for iPhone and iPad

BBC History Magazine app good for

I love it! Not being in Britain I can read the magazine anyway abroad. I cant compare with the paper version though but the online one is just perfect.
Love it, just wish it still had the crossword from the print edition.
This is a remarkable compendium of historical issues with a British focal point. Its informative, accurate and yet entertaining - never boring! We look forward each month to the e-copy for stimulation and also to savouring the hard copy a few days later. Thanks for all your contributions and hard work - it really works for my wife and me. David E C Huggins
Wonderfully researched articles on all the historical topics that interest me
I dont usually review things but I really do look forward to my History Magazine and after 2 years I can say it doesnt repeat or get boring. Well Done! I also love the podcasts that go along with the articles. Thanks!
Beautiful photography and illustrations. Readable history. Enlightening.

Some bad moments

I was pretty excited about this app, but it constantly crashes. I havent even been able to keep it open long enough to read an issue.
The content of the history magazine is very good and interesting to read, I have subscribed to the paper version for many years. I decided to switch to the electronic version on my iPad and I must say I am very disappointed in the quality of the app itself. It does not conform to many of the iPad standards that we have grown used to (e.g. you cannot escape the text and pictures by using your two fingers as in most other apps) and although they have tried to add in some other features it is not what I would have expected of a BBC based publication. There is no functionality that enables one to copyprint off interesting articles that one may want to refer to or share a few paragraphs of an article. Really a disappointment and may even cause me to go back to the paper version.
Purchased a year subscription with promotion of 13 free back issues. Have received current issue, but no back issues, even after selecting restore purchases. Contacted them via their form, and was advised to make sure I have most up to date app. , I didnt, updated, and also uninstalled, reinstalled when nothing happened. I went back to the person, and I am now being told it will be fixed in a future app, and to keep trying to restore purchases when updates are released in the future?? And sorry for the inconvenience! I did find the one issue of the magazine interesting, but I am totally unimpressed with the way they dealt with this.
Sorry to say that every month the downloading of the issues has became an ordeal. The latest special edition about the Georgians is not to download. The magazine itself is excellent but be prepared to spend most of the time trying & trying & trying... Plus usual complaints with I-Tunes hoping to let you the same issue pay twice
Given that this is a BBC Magazine, most of the history is understandably anglocentric. That said, there is a generous amount of world history involved, and the articles are wonderfully written, and spiced up with charming tidbits like ancient recipes and amazing pictures. The writers always give readers a good, quick overview of the subject, getting them up to speed. Then they let you in on new, surprising discoveries or just updates that can turn everything you thought you knew upside down. Articles are a satisfying length, but for those who want more, the magazine offers links to further info. It also has an option to LISTEN to the article. Awesome! And, finally, it offers reviews of history books. This is a great digital mag for history buffs of all levels and kinds. Other such magazines should take their cue from this one.
Really loved the magazine when i read it at friends house but couldnt put up with the magazine clutters afterwards so decide to use this app instead. It downloaded perfectly and tried to download the free sample. Upon viewing it crashed after few secs, didnt even get chance to read the article. Uninstalled and tried again, still same problem. Im using ipad 1 so does that mean it is not compatible? Please developers fix this.
